Deformation and relaxation of viscous thin films under bouncing drops

چکیده
Thin, viscous liquid films subjected to impact events can deform. Here we investigate free surface oil film deformations that arise due the air pressure buildup under impacting and rebouncing water drops. Using Digital Holographic Microscopy, measure 3D topography of deformed immediately after drop rebound, with a resolution down 20 nm. We first discuss how is initially during impact, as function thickness, viscosity, speed. Subsequently, describe slow relaxation process rebound. Scaling laws for broadening width decay amplitude perturbations are obtained experimentally found be in excellent agreement results from lubrication analysis. finally arrive at detailed spatio-temporal description

Linear stability analysis is employed to derive analytical expressions for the growth rate of disturbances applied to a thin plane-parallel film trapped between two drops. From these expressions, the band of unstable wavenumbers and the "most dangerous" wavenumber are identified for systems in the absence and presence of insoluble surfactant. Marangoni effects are shown to exert a stabilizing i...
متن کاملWetting dynamics of thin liquid films and drops under Marangoni and centrifugal forces.
This paper presents an experimental study on thin liquid drops and films under the combined action of centrifugal forces due to rotation and radial Marangoni forces due to a corresponding temperature gradient. We shall examine thinning of a given liquid layer both with and without rotation and also consider the onset of the fingering instability in a completely wetting liquid drop. In many of t...
متن کاملInterfacial dynamics of thin viscoelastic films and drops
We present a computational investigation of thin viscoelastic films and drops on a solid substrate subject to the van der Waals interaction force, in two spatial dimensions. The governing equations are obtained within a long-wave approximation of the Navier–Stokes equations with Jeffreys model for viscoelastic stresses. We investigate the effects of viscoelasticity, Newtonian viscosity, and the...
متن کاملInteraction of two deformable viscous drops under external temperature gradient
The axisymmetric deformation and motion of interacting droplets in an imposed temperature gradient is considered using boundary-integral techniques for slow viscous motion. Results showing temporal drop motion, deformations and separation are presented for equal-viscosity fluids. The focus is on cases when the drops are of equal radii or when the smaller drop trails behind the larger drop. For ...
